Often referred to as the wickedest female lyricist in soca, Trinidad-born
Ms. Alysha features Barbadian soca star Peter Ram on her latest
single for the upcoming Trinidad Carnival titled “Coming Down the Road.”
Born Alysha Alleyne, she grew up in Barataria and then moved to the gritty
streets of Bon Air Gardens in Arouca, North-East Trinidad, where she spent her
free time playing the steel pan, excelling at hip-hop dancing and emulating the
dancehall stylings of her idols, Patra, Lady G and Lady Saw as well as her
favourite dancehall artist - Super Cat.
In 2001, she burst onto the scene with her first solo hit with the
tongue-in-cheek smash, “Not A Singer”, which became a radio and party
favourite throughout the Caribbean that year. She hit the charts again soon
after that, duetting with her “big brother in the business”, Mista Vybe,
to record the popular Soca single “Left Hand Side” (cleverly based on
Musical Youth’s 80’s Pop/Reggae classic “Pass the Dutchie”).
In 2005, Ms. Alysha had industry tongues wagging once again with the fiery
lyrics of her single “Comin' 2 Get Ya”, which was one of several hits on
the immensely popular Take Over Riddim produced by studio whiz-kid and Kasey
Phillips who also produced the previously mentioned “Left Hand Side”.
Boasting brilliantly irreverent lyrics like “if you wanna get it on, let’s
get it on/Let’s square off like Destra and Denise Belfon” and “Remove the
politics and tell me what you got/Half the artists on top - dey not so hot”,
“Comin' 2 Get Ya” had people both in and out of the Soca business asking
“Who IS this girl”? Since then she has been consistent in her quest to lyrically
conquer the world at large and the Soca “game” in particular. In 2006 she was a
strong runner in the Road March race with the now-classic “Party”
(featuring two-time Road March Queen FayAnn Lyons), which took Alysha to
her first International Soca Monarch Competition final, making her one of the
Top Ten Soca acts of that year. The video for the song consistently charted in
the Top Ten viewer requests on “D’ Scene” (Trinidad’s most popular music
video countdown show) and on Tempo’s “Cross Caribbean Countdown”, and has
drawn even more attention to her abilities.
Since then the hits kept coming, including her the lyrically sizzling “Answer
Back” (a response to Ragga Soca King Bunji Garlin’s song “Indecent
Proposal”) on the popular Miracle Riddim, “Go Down Low And Wine”
(featuring accapella quartet H2O Phlo) and her 2007 radio and party smash “Unity”.
For 2008 she has become one of the most sought-after collaborators on the Soca
scene, joining up with newcomer Ejo for the patois-tinged single “Concentration”,
as well as with popular Grenadian singing sensation Ignition for the remix of
the Spice Isle Carnival hit “I Know Carnival”, not to mention her
specially requested duet with 1999 Road March Queen Sanell Dempster for the
sultry “Always Ready”.
And as if all that wasn’t enough, she also penned a solo smash geared
specifically for masqueraders. Produced once again by her “little brother”
Kasey Phillips, who also produced the now-classic “Party”, her new Road
March contender “We Own D’ Road” is by all accounts a sure-fire
front-runner for the Road March title and a definite favourite at clubs and
parties.
Finally, her lyrically dizzying “Work Him Out” (featured on the popular 7
O’Clock News Riddim) is touted as having the fastest lyrical delivery for the
year, in addition to being a favourite tune for the ladies to “bruck out” to and
a must-have for West Indian radio and party/club DJs.
Armed with a barrage of scorching-hot new songs and a revamped, sexier and more
“mature” image, Ms. Alysha notes, chuckling: “If people thought I was something
before, wait till they get a taste of the new and improved Ms. Alysha for 2008!”
